Its that insane time of year again! Hot on the heels of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in L.A. comes the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco.
Our staff have been nerding out on the cool console console gaming announcements from E3, but we are an iPhone game developer, so WWDC will have a much greater impact on our games. Unfortunately, we didn’t attend WWDC in this, Kwalee’s first year, but the announcement of iOS 6, the new operating system update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, has got everyone in the office talking.
One of the key features of the new iOS is the integration of Facebook at the system level. This follows from the similar level of interaction that Twitter was given in iOS a few updates back. Expect to be able to post to Facebook from within the majority of your iPhone or iPad’s native apps. Post your location from Maps, share photos directly from the Camera and dictate status updates with Siri.
For Kwalee, as iPhone multiplayer game developers, iOS 6 will allow us to know that more people will be logged into Facebook on their device. We launched Gobang Social using Facebook login for our matchmaking and while we are adding additional matchmaking services, such as email, we can reasonably anticipate that more apps and games will be encouraging users to login with Facebook and share content with friends. This process should also become more reliable and more user-friendly too.
We can’t wait to get to grips with the developer beta of iOS 6 and try out the new Facebook stuff, as well as all of the other shiny new things!
