WWDC: MacBook Pro

By Joe Barron – Community Evangelist

On Tuesday we talked about how the new version of the iPhone operating system, iOS 6, will impact upon our games. If you missed that, then check it out on our blog.

Of course there was another cool announcement at WWDC, the new MacBook Pro featuring Apple’s gorgeous Retina Display technology.

MacBook Pro Retina Display

All of the Kwalee hipsters are really excited by this announcement, particularly those who have a design mindset. Adam Philbin, our Interactive Designer has been hammering the Apple Store website to try to order one of these high tech fashion accessories. He has finally got his order in and is hoping to receive his new “baby” in the next week or so. Jay Lytwynenko, one of our Artists, is also saving up for a shiny new toy.

It certainly looks like its going to be an amazing screen, but the one concern from content creators is that they don’t currently support anything even close to the 2800 resolution that Apple are talking about. Very few games even run in 1080p, let alone 2800! Attempting to stretch a game to that resolution would really harm the graphical performance and framerate and require much higher resolution art assets. Of course, when Retina technology came to the iPhone and iPad, many mobile game developers had similar concerns, but they have learned to embrace the technology to create stunning games.

Apple are also bringing Game Center to Mac OSX, potentially creating the possibility of cross-platform play between iOS and Mac gamers. Its hard to say whether this will have a major impact on multiplayer gaming, but it could create some really interesting opportunities for the development community, particularly indie companies like us who always love to experiment.

Hopefully Kwalee will be able to attend WWDC in the future so that we can enjoy the Apple showmanship in person!
