Working as a video game artist, I am always fascinated by the rapid progression in the quality of game graphics. As I mentioned in my previous post on Kwalee.com, mobile games are advancing at the speed of light. The amount of graphical fidelity we have on our phones now would never have been predicted even five years ago! How would you have reacted then, if someone had told you that you would soon be able to play a perfect port of Grand Theft Auto 3 or Max Payne on your phone?

I am always on the lookout for games that redefine boundaries in mobile game graphics. In these regular blog posts I will try to showcase what, in my opinion, are the most gorgeous games on the iOS App Store and Google Play.

For my first choice, I have chosen the recently released drag-racing game, CSR Racing, by NaturalMotion Games. The game is just a simple drag-racing “sim” where all you have to do in terms of gameplay is change gears and fire-up NOS when needed, but it has stunning visuals. This is not a full-blown racing game with 3D environments and effects, so the developers were able to squeeze an incredible amount of detail into each car! The models look spectacular on the iPhone’s crisp retina display, showcasing near console-quality car models and effects, all packed in a meagre 79MB download! There isn’t much content in terms of car manufacturers but hopefully future updates will add more cars and customisation options to the game. CSR Racing is free too. This is might be just a quick game for playing in short bursts, but it sure as hell looks amazing! Definitely an app to try if you want to show off the power of your iPhone to your friends!
